Rafael Feijao Defeats Mike Kyle by Guillotine Choke - Mike Kyle hits like a truck. He's a dangerous fighter. Along with that, the first time he threw down with Rafael Feijao Cavalcante, he won by way of TKO. Fast forward to the present day. Would Feijao come through this time, or would Kyle once again take him out? Get ready, get set, go! Early on, Feijao came inside and dropped Kyle with a knee. From there, Kyle got up, where Feijao jumped up and slapped on the guillotine choke. Rather than drop to the canvas, Kyle chose to stand up with him on his neck for a while before attempting to escape via slam. Didn't work. Instead, Kyle tapped. Donald Cerrone Defeats Jeremy Stephens by Unanimous Decision - Jeremy Stephens vs. Donald Cerrone at the UFC on Fuel 3. Anyone else smell a knockout? Here's how it all went down. Early on, Stephens landed a low kick, then an uppercut as Cerrone came inside. Another low kick from Stephens landed. Then Cerrone hit home with a low kick of his own. A quick right hand from Stephens found its mark; Cerrone followed it up with a hard low kick. "The Cowboy" is starting out slowly. But then as they neared the three minute mark, Cerrone began changing his rhythm, coming forward with leg and hand strike combinations before dropping out of harm's way again. And from there, he began gaining confidence and hitting home with sharper strikes of the same variety, ending the stanza with a flying knee. Cerrone definitely took round one. The second round saw Cerrone land tons of kicks, hands, and everything. And after a combination that ended with a left uppercut, Stephens was clearly hurt. Though Stephens recovere...

Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader at the UFC on FOX 4 - Karate vs. Wrestling in the Modern Era - Back on November 12, 1993, the purest display of martial arts style vs. martial arts style took place. That's right- we're talking about UFC 1. At the time, competitors pretty much knew their own discipline and no other. Boxing, karate, and, of course, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were on display. As we all know now, those early UFC's proved the worth of grappling arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling. Meanwhile, they left many with a bad taste i...

Mas Oyama and the Difference With Modern Traditional Martial Arts Practitioners - I once read a book entitled Me, Chi, and Bruce Lee by Brian Preston. It was an entertaining martial arts read about a self-proclaimed "spineless wuss" (Preston) who embarks on a quest to achieve a black belt within one year. Along the way, he travels the world meeting up with martial artists, instructors, and fighters like Sifu Bob, Royce Gracie, Jeff Monson, Jarek Szymanski and more on his path towards martial arts enlightenment. In the book, Preston questioned Szymanski, a man extremely skilled and knowledgeable in the ...

Frank Mir to Fight Junior dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight Belt - Yes, Alistair Overeem will still plead his case to NSAC regarding his testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio of 14:1 on Tuesday. But that won't keep him on the UFC 146 fight card, nor will it promise him another shot at current UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos. Overeem has now been pulled from the UFC 146 main event in favor of former champion Frank Mir....

Matt Brown Defeats Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson by Unanimous Decision at UFC 145 - Coming into his UFC 145 bout against Matt Brown, everyone simply knew Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson as that new karate fighter in the UFC. Of course, with karate still somewhat stigmatized as less than useful in the sport of mixed martial arts, there was some pressure on Thompson to do well. Wondering how it all went down? You've come to the right place. Early in round one, Thompson landed a sid...

Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki Bellator 66 Results - Former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez has only lost twice since July of 2007. One of those losses came to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu superstar Shinya Aoki at K-1 - Dynamite!! Power of Courage 2008. Simply put, the two entered the ring, and only 92 seconds later they left with Aoki taking home victory by way of heel hook. Enter 2012 and Bellator 66. Alvarez, coming off of a loss to Michael Chandler, really needed a victory badly to reaffirm his top lightweight status. Aoki, on the other hand, could once and for all prove to be a better fighter than his counterpart. Alvarez landed a punch to the body and several grazing shots early in round one.  Alvarez then hit home with two more body punches over time....

Malcolm Bull: Climate Change Ethics - For the benefit of anyone who has spent the past decade or so on a different planet, the most frequently asked questions about climate change on this one are as follows. Is it getting warmer? Yes, surface temperatures have risen by 0.8°C from pre-industrial levels. Are humans causing it? Almost certainly. The gases produced by industrialisation and agriculture are known to have an insulating effect, and their concentration in the earth?s atmosphe...

Layla Al-Zubaidi: In Syria - ?Welcome to Assad?s Syria,? the signpost at the Lebanese-Syrian border still says, letting the visitor know who owns the country. The ceasefire had just been announced, but few Syrians I knew held out much hope that three hundred UN observers could keep an eye on the whole army. The journey from Beirut to Damascus by shared taxi takes less than three hours. For years I?ve come this way to visit the Syrian side of my family. It was clear that thin...

Mark Ford: Pound Writes Home - By my count, though I may have missed a few, this is the 25th volume of Ezra Pound?s highly distinctive correspondence to see the light of day. The first selection of his letters, edited by D.D. Paige and culled from the years 1907-41, was published in 1950, when Pound was four years into what would be a 12-year sojourn in St Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, to which he?d been confined indefinitely after pleading insanity at his trial for treas...

Choose Charcoal for Drawing - Compressed stick charcoal seems to be the default selection for most people starting out in charcoal drawing - perhaps because it's relatively sturdy, uniform and gives a good range of tone - ideal for beginners. There are many other options though, all with slightly different properties which lend themselves to different ways of working. Check out my drawing charcoal review .Choose Charcoal for Drawing originally appeared on About.com Drawing /...

Perspective Basics - Perspective drawing really isn't that scary. The main thing is to start simple - don't leap straight into a three-point drawing of the Leaning Tower of Pizza if you've never even constructed perspective before, ok? Start with a simple box in one-point perspective. When you've got that squared away, try boxes in two-point perspective. You'll need to learn how to divide space. A useful technique is the 'crossed diagonals' method of finding the cent...

White Chalk on Black Paper - Drawing with white chalk on black paper can look really effective and dramatic. But handled badly, it can also look really 'wrong'! The biggest problem is the temptation to outline in white, where we would normally be using a graphite pencil. The trick is to reverse the way we look at things. With graphite or ink, we draw the darks and shadows, and sometimes don't give the highlights much attention. When drawing with white on black, we need to p...

Better Photographs Make Better Drawings - It's generally better to draw from life than to draw from a photograph, but sometimes having a subject sit for hours isn't possible. Kids are particularly challenging sitters - they just won't sit still for a moment! If you're going to draw from a photograph, you really need it to be a good one. A well-lit picture with a natural subject is so much easier to draw and will give you really great results. It's particularly important when drawing anim...

Draw a Viking Warrior - If you love fantasy, action and adventure movies you've probably already seen 'Thor' and 'The Avengers' starring the Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth. The movies are based on the Marvel comic books and so don't spend much time in the ancient world - Thor looks like a thoroughly modern hero! Leonardo da Vinci Quotes on Drawing - Leonardo da Vinci is a fascinating artist, and while a few enigmatic pieces get a lot of airtime, I often think that the old master has a lot to offer the modern artist beyond these iconic works. I thought I'd take a look at where Leonardo is coming from and what he has to say on a few topics about drawing, perspective and learning to be an artist. Improving Your Drawing: Middle Values - An error I've noticed in many beginner (and even more experienced) artists' work lately is a gap in the tonal range. Often artists will focus on the outlines, so these will be strong, and they know they need confident darks, so they'll shade quite powerful shadows. But then things go a bit pear-shaped when they start to tackle the rest of the shading. I think in part it's a desire to get the subtleties of tone so not to be too heavy-handed, but t...

Improve Your Drawing - The trouble with being stuck in a rut is that you don't always know it - you keep going over the same old ground and it's not until you're entrenched in a well-worn groove that you discover that you're repeating yourself. If you're lucky, it just means that you never get beyond being 'pretty good' and your work always has that familiar 'look' to it. If you're not, it can mean mediocrity and a slow wearing-away of creativity and enthusiasm. Here a...

Pencil Shading Exercise - Shade an Egg. - Practicing shading with simple objects is a good way to develop skills quickly. Instead of thinking about a composition with many complicated textures, you can pay attention to subtle changes of tone and concentrate on handling the pencil to get the kind of shading you want. It's useful to try these exercises out with different papers and pencils - for example, as well as basic sketchbook paper, try a smooth hot-pressed paper as well as something...
